Let's Talk About Colic in Horses

Updated: Nov 29, 2021

Don't know about you guys, but when I see one of my horses lying down in the paddock - it sends the nerves racing! My "elderly" mare, Lucy, has had the odd bout of colic in her time and I've witnessed first-hand Homoeopathic remedies produce an incredible turnaround!

REMEMBER: QUICK ACTION is your helper here and "observe, observe, observe". Get to know what's normal and not normal behaviour in your horse beforehand.

Here's some remedies to keep in mind, should you find yourself in this situation with your horse:

ACONITE: Great remedy to start off with in the first stages, helps to alleviate the fear in the horse as well.

BELLADONNA: Pulse is fast, there could be sweating and dilated pupils, the horse is restless. Skin is hot and smooth.

COLOCYNTHIS: Spasmodic colic with intense pain. Manure will be watery with flatulence. Horse will tend to bend "double" turning their head to the tummy, rather than stretching out from the pain.

COLCHIUM: Abdomen is distended and there's lots of flatulence. Lower parts of the bowel can become distended and can be felt on the right side. The horse will remain standing.

These are just a few of the Homoeopathic Colic Remedies that can be used, if you'd like to learn more about how Homoeopathy can help your horse in both acute and chronic conditions, book a FREE 15min Chat by clicking on the link below:
